The Act of Socializing

I do not remember the last time I backed out of an opportunity of socializing with an acquaintance so that I can get to know about him better. Actually if we talk in straight terms the communication or networking i develop with the other person helps me in building long term relationships. Communication works for those who work at it. Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after. What is the most important component of socializing: words with which you do it. Words not only affect us temporarily; they change us. Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind. But special care needs to be taken when using words as words should be used as tools of communication and not as a substitute for action No man means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous. Its sometimes do not cost you a fortune to be garrulous so that you can talk your heart out to the other person, as we often say that quantity is accompanied with quality. If we take a look at our system of corporate socialism, where companies capitalize their profits and socialize their losses, we have great things to be learned and apply on to our daily life.

What does it take to be a socializer:
Nothing less than innovation and creativity. You should always be geared up for making the atmosphere pleasant either by firing up little chunks of humour or making the other person feel at ease. Hesitations can be the one roadblock that one needs to avoid to master the act of networking with others. Let it be the college canteen, friend’s place, playground, market, gymnasium or a company, I make full use of the chance I get to do social interaction with other people. Humans are social animals; we spend much of our time with others in groups. We are also wise. It is not our size, speed, or strength that distinguishes us from other mammals, but our intelligence. These two features -- being social and being smart go together. Author Oscar Ybarra and his colleagues at the University of Michigan explored the possibility that social interaction improves mental functioning. They tested the participants' level of cognitive functioning, comparing it to the frequency of participants' social interactions. They found that people who engaged in social interaction displayed higher levels of cognitive performance than the control group. Social interaction aided intellectual performance. People reap cognitive benefits from socializing. Social interaction exercises cognitive processes that are measured on intellectual tasks. It is possible that as people engage socially and mentally with others, they receive relatively immediate cognitive boosts.
I believe that person’s ability to strike a conversation with others reflects his confidence. Let the world know you as you are, not as you think you should be. Talking to others on a regular basis helps you define originality. Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever said before, but in saying exactly what you think yourself. It helps you in expressing yourself better and in a more openly manner. I had many interactions that were accidental, some were repeated which somehow also helped me develop my own personality.

We have various live examples of social networking sites like orkut, facebook on which lacks of people come together and interact, some without even knowing each other, send messages and express themselves. It is an effective and efficient way of communication. You can make more friends in two months by becoming really interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.

George Bernard Shaw once said “The problem with communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished”. This is very true because everytime you have a conversation with a known or unknown acquaintance, friend or a foe, you always tend to miss on something, it could be that the listener misinterprets or the same problem could be on your side. In case of socializing it should be ensured that the right thing has been conveyed and right thing has been understood.

History has also proved in the past that a leader is the one who knows how to socialize with the common man, understand their feelings and problems. It is how better you are able to connect with people. Although these characteristics or features of socializing are not inherent in human but by time these things can be developed.

We can conclude by saying that socializing is a part of human life because of its various merits and also as studies show that an active social life appears to delay memory loss as we age.
